Material Comparison & Machining Guide

Hastelloy C-22 vs Hastelloy C-276: Precision Machining Guide for Aerospace, Medical & Harsh Chemical Environments

AXALLOY Precision is a Shenzhen-based CNC machining partner specializing in complex, high-value components made from difficult-to-machine alloys. We support international engineering, procurement, and quality teams from prototype development through low-volume and repeat production.

Two Premium Superalloys, One Standard of Precision

We focus on Hastelloy C-22 (UNS N06022) and Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276), two premium nickel-chromium-molybdenum superalloys prized for exceptional corrosion resistance in oxidizing, reducing, and mixed-acid environments. These alloys are common in aerospace, medical devices, semiconductor equipment, energy, oil & gas, marine, robotics, and precision industrial applications.

As a best-fit partner for OEMs, Tier 1/2 suppliers, engineering firms, and contract manufacturers (especially in North America, Europe, UK, Australia, NZ, and advanced Asian markets), AXALLOY delivers the manufacturability, process control, documentation, and dependable communication that pure price-focused buyers do not require.

Chemical Composition & Mechanical Properties

Both alloys deliver outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, plus broad chemical compatibility. The table below highlights the key elemental differences that drive material selection.

C-22 Performance Edge

Excels in oxidizing acids, mixed acids, and oxidizing environments due to its higher Cr + Mo balance.

C-276 Performance Edge

Performs better in strongly reducing acids and offers slightly better cost sensitivity in certain reducing applications.

Both alloys are fully heat-treatable, weldable, and suitable for high-temperature service (up to ~900 °C).

Machining Considerations for Difficult Alloys

C-22 and C-276 are among the most challenging nickel-based superalloys to machine — they work-harden rapidly, harden during machining, and require controlled parameters to avoid tool wear, distortion, or subsurface cracking.

Process Key Parameter Considerations Typical Achievable Tolerance / Finish
3/4/5-axis Milling 15–25% higher spindle power, slower feeds (30–50% of steel), 3–4 flutes carbide or coated tools ±0.005 mm, Ra 0.8–1.6 µm (precision)
Turning / Mill-Turn Lower RPM, high-pressure coolant, polished inserts ±0.005 mm, Ra 0.8 µm
Swiss CNC Ø0.5–32 mm bar, live tooling, short chip control ±0.005 mm
Wire / Sinker EDM Die-sinking or wire for sharp corners & internal features ±0.005 mm, Ra 0.4–0.8 µm (EDM)
Precision Grinding Light cuts, vitrified wheels, spark-out ±0.002 mm, Ra 0.2 µm
