What makes Monel turning challenging—and how we control it

Monel (nickel-copper) alloys are tough, work-hardening and prone to built-up edge and galling. Our approach keeps the cut consistent, temperatures controlled and geometry stable:

Design-for-manufacture tips for Monel turning

  • Provide thread reliefs and generous run-outs to avoid uncontrolled tear at exits
  • Specify thread class and gauge standard; note if thread sealing surfaces require lapped finish
  • Avoid very thin unsupported walls; consider minimum wall ≥0.5 mm for stability
  • Use realistic surface finish callouts: Ra 1.6 μm typical for turned surfaces; tighten only where functionally necessary
  • Call out sealing faces and critical interfaces for focused process control
  • For K-500, specify condition (solution-annealed, aged) and any post-machining age requirements
  • If corrosion test or media exposure is critical, note standards and acceptance criteria
