Overcoming Machining Complexities in 15-5 PH Stainless Steel
15-5 PH (XM-12) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel designed to deliver higher transverse toughness than 17-4 PH. However, its tendency toward work-hardening, abrasive tool wear, and heat generation demands meticulous cutter selection, rigid tool holding, and controlled feed rates to avoid distortion and subsurface damage.
Heat-Treat State Management
We optimize machining sequences across Solution Annealed (Condition A) and precipitation-hardened stages (H900, H1025, H1075, H1150). Critical dimensional features and thin sections are skimmed or ground post-aging to neutralize volumetric shrinkage.
Thermal & Stress Distortion Control
The low thermal conductivity of 15-5 PH concentrates thermal stress at the cutting zone. AXALLOY utilizes high-pressure through-spindle coolant, balanced roughing passes, and intermediate stress-relief annealing to safeguard geometrical stability.
Tight Feature Tolerance down to ±0.005 mm
Precision bearing bores, high-pressure sealing faces, and spline profiles are machined using multi-axis live tooling, wire EDM, and cylindrical grinding to ensure roundness within 0.002 mm and Ra 0.2 µm finishes without surface micro-fissures.
